Hey, Arts Kid!

Who are
We?

MADE Urban Arts is an offsite interdisciplinary arts program offered by the Upper Grand District School Board every second semester of each academic year. As a dynamic leader in arts education for Guelph and Wellington County for over 10 years, MADE students are offered the opportunity to flex their creative muscles each day under the tutelage of experienced teachers and countless clinicians across all arts disciplines.

Students who attend earn four credits in music, art, drama and English during their semester-long journey in MADE, and are on the fast track for the Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) Arts and Culture Designation on their Ontario Secondary School Diploma.

If you love the arts, there is no better place to be.

Location

The MADE Urban Arts program currently operates out of Heritage Hall located at 83 Essex Street in Guelph. This beautiful historic building, lovingly cared for by the Guelph Black Heritage Society, boasts a large open concept space as well as a basement with a library and music room; it is truly ideal for the creation and movement that happens each day within the MADE program. The building is conveniently situated with its central location, and is easily accessible for most students residing in Guelph due to its proximity to several local city bus routes and the downtown core.

From the Guelph Black Heritage Society:

“The Guelph BME (British Methodist Episcopal) Church has stood at 83 Essex Street since 1880. The Guelph BME was built by formerly enslaved Black individuals and their descendants who arrived in the area via the Underground Railroad. The Guelph Black Heritage Society (GBHS) was formed after the BME Church was listed for sale in November 2011. The purpose of the GBHS is to preserve the historical significance of the BME Church by creating a cultural, historical and social centre within Guelph and Wellington County. The GBHS’s offer to purchase the BME Church was accepted and the sale was finalized in December 2012. The Guelph BME Church building has been renamed Heritage Hall.”
